Statement of Intent

In our inclusive music curriculum, we aim to promote the enthusiasm for, and the enjoyment of, music in all its forms.

Statement of Intent: Our aim is to make music an enjoyable experience by offering all of our pupils a wide variety of musical experiences. By engaging pupils in musical experiences, we offer our pupils opportunities to develop skills, attitudes and attributes that can support learning in other curriculum areas as well as developing life skills such as listening, the ability to concentrate, creativity, self-confidence and a sensitivity towards others and the environment.

Our music lessons focus on the following musical skills; listening, appraising, performing, improvising, composing and evaluating. We are committed to developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life. Our pupils are given opportunities to listen to live and recorded music from a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres.

Our pupils are given the opportunity to learn to play a large variety of musical instruments, taught by specialist music teachers. We give our pupils the opportunity to perform in school and in our local community. We develop hidden talents and passions from an early age and ensure all our pupils reach their full potential within our curriculum.

Every one of our pupils are an unique individual with their own strengths, aptitudes, interests and dreams. As a school community, we will endeavour to support each child to make the most of every opportunity we offer.

To ensure our pupils have the best opportunity to acquire and nurture their musical talents and awareness, we use ‘Charanga’, a musical programme that teaches pupils to listen and respond to a variety of musical genres, through the medium of singing, playing instruments, exploring form and composing their own musical creations.

At our school they are provided with the musical foundations to enhance their musical interests and education, as young musicians.
