Phonics

·     At Lodge Farm, we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds scheme.

·     We teach whole class phonic lessons daily which last for around 30 minutes.

  • Each lesson has a clear structure which all staff have been trained to follow.

  • A new sound will be taught each day and any children who are falling behind will be identified quickly and will be put into ‘keep up sessions’ to ensure they are given support to keep up with the programme.

  • We assess children every half term to determine graphemes and phonemes the children need additional support with.

  • By the end of Year 1 all children will have been exposed to the full phonetic code they need to ensure they can read.

  • We aim for children to be keen, confident readers as they move into Year 2.

  • In Year 2 children begin to learn about different spelling rules.

  • Further support is offered to children across school.

Reading material

  • All children accessing phonics support will be bringing home two different reading books:

  • A Big Cat Letters and Sounds book which is fully decodable and based around the phonemes they are currently being taught. These are to be kept for a week to enable children to build fluency and confidence.

  • A ‘Reading for Pleasure’ book which is selected by the children because they feel they will enjoy it. This is a book to share with parents/carers and doesn’t have to be a book they can decode independently.
