Design and Technology

Statement of Intent

At Lodge Farm Primary School, we believe that design and technology helps to prepare children for the developing world and encourages them to become curious and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team.

Through the study of design and technology, they will be planning and communicating ideas, and combining practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues. Design and technology helps all children to become discerning and informed consumers and potential innovators in the future world. It provides children with a greater awareness and understanding of how everyday products are designed and made, why they are made a certain way.

As stated in the National Curriculum:

‘The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

§ Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world

§ Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users

§ Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others

§ Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.’

Intent

In KS1, children are design a simple product with use, selecting materials and tools to make their product and evaluating their finished product.  Children will begin to make relevant links from art to other curriculum subjects, such as D&T. In year 2, children will communicate their ideas through talking, drawing and mock-ups, use simple finishing techniques when making their product and compare final products suggesting improvements. In KS2, designing, making and evaluating are developed by using technology when designing new products, making products which aims at specific individuals or groups and critically evaluating and carrying out tests.

Food Technology

Through the study of Design and Technology, the pupils of Lodge Farm will take part in food technology lessons where the children will understand, progress, and apply their skills of cooking. At Lodge Farm we believe that learning how to cook a range of basic dishes is a crucial life skill that enables children to feed themselves and others affordably, now and in their adult lives. Lessons will provide children with a greater awareness of the origin of different foods, the principles of nutrition and the benefits of making healthier choices. Food technology lessons will enable children to respect each other opinions, tradition, and cultures by exploring a variety of dishes. Children will build on their knowledge throughout their time at Lodge Farm ensuring they have the resources and knowledge to develop previously learnt skills and to build on new ones.
