How we promote Reading

Family Story Time Sessions

At Lodge Farm Primary, we value reading for pleasure and sharing stories with others. Discussing books and interacting with other people develops social and language skills, builds imagination and supports a lifelong joy of reading.  Reading is not simply a system of decoding words or deciphering combinations of letters on the page, but an active skill in which children talk about their personal experience of a book.

Reading for the joy of reading is an essential part of our English curriculum and through our Family Story Time session in the Early Years, we promote and support this important skill.

Parents and Carers are invited to join their child in their classroom and spend some time listening and sharing books and stories together.

Book Vending Machine

Each week a child from every class from Reception to Year 6 is chosen as star reader. The children receive a certificate in assembly and a gold token to put into the Book Vending Machine to select a book of their choice.

Class Texts

We promote a love of reading in classrooms by displaying the texts that each class will focus on throughout the year, so children understand the importance of reading and develop a love for reading.

Reading Pods

All children are given regular opportunities to visit the Reading Pod, so they can develop a love of reading by enjoying a book with their friends or reading independently.

Walsall Mobile Library

Children are given the opportunity to visit the mobile library so they can access a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books to read or share at home.

Lunchtime Story Time

This time is used for Year 6 children to share a book with KS1 children and to listen to each other read.
